What is flu?
The flu is a highly contagious infection of the nose, throat, and lungs. It is often confused with the common cold, but the flu is caused by a different virus, more severe, and lasts longer. Flu is spread by tiny droplets, which are transmitted through coughs and sneezes. You can also catch flu if you touch something with the virus, and then touch your mouth or nose.
What are the symptoms?
Flu symptoms will start within two to three days of you contracting the virus, and can last for up to a week. They include:
- Body aches
- Runny nose
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
What are the treatment options?
The best remedy for flu is plenty of rest and water. You can also take paracetamol to lower your temperature and combat your aches. Additionally, for patients with very severe symptoms or those who are prone to complications, doctors may also prescribe antivirals.
